How to Check for Thatch

 Are you worried about having a thatch problem? Checking the thickness of your lawn’s thatch layer is quite easy; all you need is a trowel and a ruler (if you want to be precise). Here’s how to check for thatch:

  1. Cut out a small plug of grass about 2 inches deep with a trowel or another garden tool.
  2. Look at the plug. You should see the grass, the soil, and a spongy layer of thatch in between them.
  3. Press down on the thatch and measure it. If it’s more than ½ of an inch thick, then you have too much thatch.
  4. Repeat with a few more plugs around different parts of your lawn to check if it’s a problem across your whole yard.

Once hailed as a drought fix

 Gov. Gavin Newsom last week passed on a chance to limit the use of the so-called “forever chemicals” in legions of plastic products when he vetoed a bill that would have banned them in synthetic lawns. His veto of an environmental bill that overwhelmingly passed the Legislature underscores California’s convoluted guidance on the plastic turf that some homeowners, schools and businesses use in place of grass in a state accustomed to drought. Less than a decade ago then-Gov. Jerry Brown signed a law prohibiting cities and counties from banning synthetic grass. At the time, the state was in the middle of a crippling drought, and fake lawns were thought to be helpful in saving water.
