Artificial grass is installed so that liquids pass through the grass to the substrate underneath. It is made from a porous backing that doesn’t allow liquids or solids to get trapped in the grass.


Your installers can also add a turf deodorizer or install a membrane to provide more airflow between the base and turf.


Some artificial grass may also have crushed rocks under the turf to help filter liquids and small solids through to the soil layer.


When you have artificial turf installed, let your installer know that you have pets. There are some types of turf that have a special anti-microbial surface to prevent the spread of bacteria from feces.


The best way to prevent problems with artificial turf for pets is to clean it up right away. Just like when you take your dog for a walk, scoop it up and toss it in the bin.


Fresh dog poop is a lot easier to manage than when it has hardened onto your turf.

Once hailed as a drought fix

 Gov. Gavin Newsom last week passed on a chance to limit the use of the so-called “forever chemicals” in legions of plastic products when he vetoed a bill that would have banned them in synthetic lawns. His veto of an environmental bill that overwhelmingly passed the Legislature underscores California’s convoluted guidance on the plastic turf that some homeowners, schools and businesses use in place of grass in a state accustomed to drought. Less than a decade ago then-Gov. Jerry Brown signed a law prohibiting cities and counties from banning synthetic grass. At the time, the state was in the middle of a crippling drought, and fake lawns were thought to be helpful in saving water.
